Move On

I held a fund raising event on eBay this week.

Every year during Chinese new year time, our Chinese school has a off-campus performance. We visit three local schools and perform traditional Chinese music, the dragon dance, folk dances, Chinese martial art, and Chinese Yo-Yo. Since Jol started to perform two years ago, I went with her and take some pictures for our school. I had some hard time this year due to the low light situation. The fact that I can't (and don't like to) use flash just makes things even worse. I have to crank ISO up to 3200 sometimes in order to get some so-so shots. Being so frustrated, I started to think maybe it's time for me to get a newer camera with better high ISO performance.

I never go for the newest model on the market (that would be 5D Mark II or 7D) and I haven't bought brand new cameras for years. The one I think can offer the function I need and being cost effective is 50D. But when checking on eBay, I found out the difference of the prices between a good used 50D and new one is only around $100. First time in 5 years, I am thinking of buying a new camera. To ease my feeling of being guilty, I decided to have a fund raising event on eBay - sell two lenses that I don't really use much anymore and my old 30D.

Things happened very fast. Three items were all sold by Wed and I got money for 50D and a bit more. I placed the order and got my 50D today.

My old (used) 30D has been with me for many years. It was the first pro-sumer camera I've ever owned. With it, I developed my own shooting style and become more confident along the years. But in this digital era, cameras are just like computers, as days go by, they become out of date. I don't like changes, I won't replace the camera unless the function I need has a breakthrough. In this case, it is the high ISO performance. It's just time for me to move on.

Thank! 50D and T1i actually use same engine (Digic IV chips and same CMOS). I am still in the process of getting familiar with it.
