Earlier this year, when Sony announced its 3rd generation Alpha 7 mirrorless full frame camera, some friends asked me: Are you going to jump your Canon sinking ship? First, Canon is not “my” ship. I kept saying, having brand loyalty in the digital era is not wise. Second, I really didn’t think Canon (or Nikon) will do nothing seeing Sony’s success in full frame camera market.
In August and September, Nikon and Canon all announced their first mirrorless full frame camera system. Is it too late for Canon or Nikon to jump into the market? I don’t think so. Many Sony fan boys say Canon has been behind by almost 6 years (Sony had their first A7 in 2013) . The fact is, back then, I think the vibe around A7 was more than its technology. Canon introduced the traditional DSLR 6D in 2012 - the entry level full frame camera that had been making fun of being out of date. I happened to have both A7 and 6D and I have to say in 2013, A7 was actually behind 6D, especially in auto focus and photo quality under some extreme situations. But people were celebrating the revolution more than the contribution to the photography itself. So A7 will always be remembered as the first full frame mirrorless camera. And 6D? People will just remember it as one of the low cost entry level full frame camera in Canon’s line up or maybe totally forget about it.
I just want to say, Canon and Nikon still have their magic, when you consider the mirrorless full frame system, check them out before you rule them out!
